Line 1 · The unnoticed well · depth starts obscure
The well deepens for years before anyone drinks. Obscurity isn’t failure; it’s construction. Keep digging; aquifers don’t apologize for their timeline. Date-stamp the progress privately: the skill gained, the layer understood, the year’s descent measured. The obscure seasons feel stationary from inside and read as astonishing in the log. Depth cannot be rushed, only abandoned; stay the extra season.
Line 2 · Circulation · the well needs drawing
Depth unused goes stale. Find outlets, students, applications; circulation keeps the water live. A consulted well stays fresh forever. If no outlet exists, build a small one on purpose: the apprentice, the article, the monthly answer given away. The first cup drawn matters most; wells that have started pouring never quite silt again.
Line 3 · Communion · depth recognizes depth
The profound recognizes its own. Seek the few whose wells match yours; those exchanges water everything else. One deep colleague outvalues a hundred shallow audiences. Seek them across fields, not just within yours: depth recognizes depth over any fence. One real conversation between wells refills both, and the aquifers, it turns out, connect underground.
Line 4 · Restructuring · depth where patches fail
This knowing shines at root causes where others treat symptoms. Offer the structural read when asked. Depth’s value is exactly where the shallow fix keeps failing. Wait for the second failure of the patch before offering the foundations; that is when the room becomes able to hear structural news. Timed there, your depth is rescue. Earlier, it is just expensive-sounding pessimism.
Line 5 · The pour · adequacy is found mid-pour
At some point the studying must risk doing. Inadequacy fear is this gate’s ghost; the water is readier than it feels. Pour; adequacy is discovered mid-pour, never before. Set pour dates that do not negotiate with the feeling: the class taught this quarter, the answer shipped this week. The inadequacy ghost attends every one and is contradicted by every one; that is the only exorcism that works.
Line 6 · On tap · profound, convenient, plain
Mature depth stops performing profundity and simply answers what’s asked, fully, then stops. The well with a good spigot serves a town. Be that: deep, useful, unceremonious. The plain answer given fully is this gate’s finished form: no throat-clearing, no credentials, just the water. People come back to that spigot for decades, and they bring their children.
