Line 3 · In the chapter · live some of it unrecorded

Narrating life can substitute for living it. Step out from behind the story regularly; be in some chapters unrecorded. The teller who still lives tells better. Leave the phone home on purpose some days; the unphotographed hour goes in deeper and comes out later as the richest material. The archive can afford the gaps. The life cannot afford to become one.

Line 4 · Expediency · emphasis, not invention

Adjust the telling to the room without falsifying the events. Emphasis is legitimate; invention isn’t. The audience grants license exactly as long as the core stays true. Keep your own canon straight: know which version is what happened and which is dressed for the stage. Tellers who lose that line lose the trust their whole craft rents from.

Told well, your experiences draw people the way fires do. Host the circle that forms. Stimulation is this gate’s service; the gathering is its proof. Tend the circle as much as the tale: draw in the quiet listener, hand the fire to other tellers, close the evening warm. The storyteller who hosts becomes an institution; the one who only performs remains an act.

Line 6 · The landing · know when the story’s over

The mature teller feels the ending and stops there. Past the natural close, every sentence subtracts. Land it, let the silence work, pass the fire. Practice the ending as its own craft: the sentence that closes the loop, the beat of silence honored, the room left wanting one more. Stories landed cleanly are retold; stories that trail off are merely endured.
