The Sources
What Human Design Is Made Of
A bodygraph looks like a single invention, but it is a weave: several much older systems, each doing one specific job inside the chart. This page names the pieces and shows the exact work each one does.
What older systems is Human Design built from?
Four older traditions carry the real structure of Human Design: the Chinese I Ching, which supplies the 64 gates and their six lines; Western astrology, which supplies the planetary calculation underneath every chart; the Hindu chakra system, which stands behind the nine centers; and the Kabbalah, whose Tree of Life echoes in the way the bodygraph draws centers joined by channels. Two of the four are not just influences but working machinery: the astrology and the I Ching are literally what a Human Design calculation computes.
The I Ching
The deepest structural source. Each of the 64 gates is one hexagram of the I Ching, the Chinese book of changes, and the wheel of the chart is all 64 hexagrams laid around the zodiac in a fixed order. A hexagram is a figure of six stacked lines, and those six lines are exactly where line numbers come from: an activation written 34.2 means the 34th hexagram, second line. The hexagram figures drawn on our gate pages are the original I Ching figures, unchanged.
Western astrology
The calculation layer. A Human Design chart begins exactly the way an astrological chart does: with the precise positions of the Sun, Moon, planets and lunar nodes at the moment of birth. Human Design then adds a second cast of the sky from about three months earlier, when the Sun sat 88 degrees behind its birth position, and calls that the design side. What differs is the reading: astrology interprets signs, houses and aspects, while Human Design converts each planetary position into a gate and line on the wheel. The astronomy underneath is identical, and it is real: our engine computes those positions to the arcminute.
The chakra system
The nine centers descend from the seven chakras of the Hindu yogic tradition, and several keep recognizable names and places: the sacral, the solar plexus, the throat, the ajna, the root. Human Design teaches that humanity moved from a seven-centered form to a nine-centered one in 1781; that is a doctrinal claim inside the tradition, not a historical or biological one, and we present it as such. What the centers do in practice is structural: they are the nine hubs the gates belong to, and whether each one is defined or open shapes everything from type to authority.
The Kabbalah
The loosest of the four borrowings. The bodygraph, with its centers joined by channels, visually echoes the Tree of Life of the Judaic Kabbalah, where ten sephirot are joined by twenty-two paths. It is an echo rather than a mapping: Human Design has nine centers and thirty-six channels, and no channel corresponds to any particular path. The Kabbalah gave the chart its diagrammatic grammar, the idea of a person drawn as connected vessels, more than any of its content.
How do the pieces actually fit together?
By exact rules, and the exactness is worth respecting. The sky is cast twice: once at birth, once from 88 degrees of Sun earlier. Each of the 26 resulting positions is converted to a gate and line by pure arithmetic: the wheel divides the zodiac into 64 gates of 5.625 degrees each, and every gate into six lines. Activated gates light up in their centers; when both gates of a channel are active, the channel completes and defines the centers at its ends; and from that pattern of definition the chart derives type, strategy, authority, profile and definition. Nothing along the way is interpretive or vague. The same birth moment produces the same chart, to the line, on any correct calculator, which is why we could verify ours to the arcminute against two independent ephemerides.
Is Human Design built on quantum physics, genetics and biochemistry?
Descriptions of Human Design often add three modern names to that list: quantum mechanics, genetics and biochemistry. Honestly told, those are descriptions rather than ingredients: no part of the calculation uses them. The genetics language comes from a numerical echo writers noticed in the 1970s, that DNA builds proteins from 64 codons just as the I Ching has 64 hexagrams; a coincidence of counting, not a biological finding. The physics language comes from the tradition’s own founding story, in which neutrinos carry an imprint into us at birth: poetry about real particles, not a mechanism. And biochemistry is simply the chakra tradition’s old associations between energy centers and organs, wearing a newer word.
So we describe the system by what it actually is: a symbolic language, composed from the four older traditions above by exact and computable rules. The mathematics we compute precisely; no scientific mechanism is claimed here, and none is needed for a mirror to be useful. What it shows you is yours to test.
